Beware of Fallacies of Unusually High Dividend Stocks - by André

From André In our meeting of Oct. 10, we looked at BXMT (Blackstone Mortgage Trust) which offers an unusually high dividend (11.75%) As Eric pointed out, the high dividend could have to do with the drop in market price of the stock price over time (not surprising for a  stock holding fixed rate long term loans in a rising interest rate environment) The attached spreadsheet (using Dividend Channel Total return numbers) confirms it. BXMT fares very poorly in total return compared to the market proxy SPY ETF, both in the long (5-10 years) and the short term (1 year). Maybe there is a way to capture the high dividend by arbitrage timing sales and purchases after each dividend is collected. But, I suspect it is not easy.       BXMT SPY BXMT SPY BXMT SPY Start date: 2013-10-14 2013-10-14 2018-10-15 2018-10-15 2022-10-13 ...
